Do you ever find yourself reviewing the numbers from last Sunday and experiencing that feeling of helplessness? Where is everyone? What do I have to do to get people to show up? It can be very frustrating.
There is no one size fits all answer on how to increase attendance. But I would love to give you 3 really simple ideas that might help you start to make a dent in the attendance challenge.
I am constantly talking about communications with pastors and church leaders and I continue to be amazed at how many of them simply ‘don’t get it’ when it comes to the power of social media. I mean why wouldn’t you want to take advantage of a free service that allows you to speak into the lives of your people 24/7/365? Well you can and you should take advantage, and here are 3 simple ideas that can not only get you started today, but could lead to tangible results on Sunday.
- Give Them A Preview Of Your Message – Take your phone, or your laptop, and record a little 2-3 minute video telling your people what you’re going to be preaching about on Sunday. Share your passion and your excitement for this topic. Tell them how it can impact their lives for the better. Share some things you’re learning as you prepare. It doesn’t have to be fancy or over produced. Just simple and straight forward. Then post it on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Put it on your website. Email it to everyone. The more you put it out there, the more exposure it gets, the more people see it, the more chances you have to convince someone this message might be something they need to hear.
- Teasers – The idea of a teaser is to tease. To tickle the ear, to make them think, to make them want to know more. Be funny. Be provocative. Ask questions that would make people think. Tell them you’re going to show a clip from a certain movie. Ask ‘why would we show a clip from Star Wars in church? Come Sunday and find out!’ Anything to peak their interest.
- Address Pain Points – Do you ever feel this way? Do you struggle with this? Is this a challenge for you? Come Sunday and find out how to win in this area of your life. If we can learn anything from Madison Avenue, it’s how to address pain points. Sit down and watch tv for an hour and pay attention to the vast majority of commercials. It’s not always obvious, but pay close attention and you’ll see what pain points are being addressed: Loneliness. Financial struggles. General dissatisfaction. Your life will be better if you buy this. You’ll be happier. More attractive. Richer. The only difference is, we actually have a real solution for all of these things. Touch a pain point, offer a solution, and there’s a good chance people will want to know what it is.
